  Anti-Spam Site Hacked

"Lycos on Tuesday kicked off its "make love not spam" campaign by offering users a screensaver that helps to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on spammers' Web sites. The company said the screensaver uses the idle processing power of a computer to slow down the response times from spammers' Web sites – much in the same way spammers use compromised PCs to distribute unsolicited e-mail messages."

  Rumble Rose Game

This one is certainly not work safe, I post it here because it looks like booth babes taken to the extreme in the PR for this upcoming console game.

"The console flesh-fest features sexy cowgirls, naughty nurses and a whole assortment of heavenly honeys. This over-the-top rope game builds on the success of the likes of stunner-packed Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball."

  nVidia GeForce 6200 Reference Card

Tweatown has a review of a nVidia GeForce 6200 reference videocard, all in all not a bad showing for a low end card.

"Today we are taking a look at the GeForce 6200 reference graphics card from nVidia which is designed to take on ATI's Radeon X300 in the low-end PCI Express VGA marketplace. After taking a detailed look at the GPU and graphics card, we compare in our usual array of benchmarks against an older GeForce PCX5900 and Radeon X300. You might be surprised by the budget gaming performance like we were."

  More Letters

Dan has another letters column today, as long as he keeps pumping them out we will keep putting them here.

"In this issue: Bad-ass laptops in Oz, Christmas tree power, laser lines, speaker sticky, more gun smuggling, free car schemes, and toy guns you may never have heard of."

  Gigabyte GV-RX70P256V X700 PRO

PC Stats has a review of the Gigabyte GV - RX70P256V X700 PRO this is a PCI-E videocard with a rather interesting cooling solution.

"Sporting the ATi Radeon X700 PRO GPU and 256MB of memory, the GV - RX70P256V's most obvious feature is the complete absence of any sort of noisy active cooling solution. Instead, the GV-RX70P256V runs a single heatpipe from the front heatsink to the pair of massive heatsinks on the back of the card, Zalman style. This heatpipe distributes the heat from the GPU equally across all heatsink surfaces. This is one of the first commercial based on a relatively advanced GPU that we've seen forgo any type of fan-cooling solution, and it might well endear ATi to gamers who value a quiet PC system."

      Samsung 10'' Portable DVD Player

BCC have been playing around with a new toy from Samsung, the DVD-L300 10" portable DVD player. Which might make a good stocking stuffer if you have deep pockets.

"Samsung recently contacted me and gave me a bit of a choice. They wanted me to take a look at their portable DVD players, and offered me either their 10" L300 unit or the 12" L1200. Both offered the same resolution - native DVD resolution of 720x480, so I opted for the 10" model as it should offer better quality as opposed to stretching the resolution another 2". Even at 10", this is the largest portable unit that I have ever had the pleasure to use. As good as it sounds, there are a couple of issues that we'll address later. Read on to find out if this unit should be added to your Christmas wish list."

Let´s take a look at the latest Gamer Chassis from Sunbeam"

ECS Unveils Motherboards w/Dual Graphic Engines

Digital Silence has a PR piece about ECS' upcoming motherboards, which allows both AGP and PCI Express cards to work together.

"The new Dual Graphic Engines are also capable of delivering dual display in 3D graphic applications. With most dual monitor graphics cards, only the main monitor channel can be used to run 3D applications such as games and DVD’s. For users that wish to run 3D applications over multiple monitors, this new technology can be utilised - Two graphics cards, an AGPX8 and a PCI Express card, can be used in parallel to generate full 3D graphics on two separate displays, harnessing the full 3D potential of the graphics cards."

      Corsair Value Ram

Lots of sites have reviews of Corsair high end memory, A1 Electronics goes the other route and looks at some Corsair PC3200 from their value line.

"They don't run at the same higher speeds of Corsair's higher performance DDR memory but then again they cost a lot less. Seems to us that this Corsair PC3200 DDR400 VS1GBKIT400 memory kit fits the bill for most computer users."

Super Market Technology In Use In The Wild

This is a very interesting use of technology, plus you will get to be amused by seeing a Panda doing a handstand while taking a leak on a tree.

"The great advantage with remote cameras is that they are non-invasive. They are simple in design, often consisting of a stills camera in a protective housing. The trigger device is based on a pulse infra-red system, similar to the motion-sensing device that opens supermarket doors when you walk towards them."

      AKCP cameraProbe8 PR

"AKCP, the world leader in snmp based environmental and security monitoring, today announces a major upgrade to its popular cameraProbe8. The cameraProbe8 is an environmental and security monitoring device which integrates a camera with multiple sensors. The cameraProbe8 can log the sensor data and associated images whenever a door is opened, motion is detected, there is water on the floor, air flow is diminished, smoke is present, a dry contact or alarm panel alerts, the temperature is out of range, voltage on any device is missing, a UPS is low on battery and many more. There are 8 intelligent autosense ports included to support customized environmental sensing."

      Swiftech MCP350 PR

"Introducing the MCP350 pump: despite a remarkably small footprint of 2.4" square, the MCP350 features an astounding 13ft of head to provide superior flow rates in today's most complex liquid cooled systems. "This product could very well be considered as our industry's Holly Grail: Small, powerful, silent, reliable, and completely plug-and-play, it embodies everything we have been looking for in a pump for the past 3 years" said Gabriel Rouchon Chairman & CTA of Swiftech."

      Albatron Mars PX915P-AGPe Motherboard

I always thought I would be a fan of motherboards like this Albatron Mars PX915P - AGPe because you could run your old AGP card in them, the problem is that doing so seems to cause a severe performance penalty.

"Either type of videocard can be used, even at the same time. Although, we should point out that the AGPe (AGP extension) slot is not necessarily equal to that of an 8X AGP slot, as it runs through the PCI bus. The flexibility is nice, and makes it the major selling point of Albatron's PX915P-AGPe motherboard."

      Hansol H950 19'' LCD

OC-Service has a review of the Hansol H950 19" LCD, which looks fine for office work but seems to show a fair amount of ghosting in games.

"Within last 2-3 years, LCD monitors have really become a hit on the computer market. Not so long ago noone would even dream they would own a LCD. Now – many users would change their CRT monitors to the new technology, that dominated the market on the whole world. I was wondering : why everybody tends to chose them and isnt the price scarry for them? The cost of a good LCD panel starts with 1500PLN and ends with really high prices. Even though it is not small money, the user will never regret his decision. Why? The technology used in this monitors means a very low power consumption, no harm for our sight ( this is one of the most important reasons why people chose LCDs ), small panel’s sizes – those are just few advantages of LCDs."

Gainward GeForce 6800 GT Ultra/2400 Golden Sample

I was wondering if Gainward was going to cut down on the length of its name for their new cards but it seems with GeForce 6800 GT Ultra/2400 Golden Sample 256MB, that the answer is no.

"Gainward's GeForce 6800 GT Ultra/2400 Golden Sample Goes Like Hell 256MB is a fast and furious card that will ultimately appeal to the enthusiast who desires clock speed above all else. In that respect, it's a decent effort. Forget that it's named a GT; that's just clever marketing. The only question you really need to ask yourself when contemplating a video card at this end of the market is whether an NV40-based 400/1200-clocked card is worth £380 of your hard-earned money. If it is, it's well worth considering."
